Businesses 'must read energy contracts before signing up'
Businesses in the UK have been warned by an expert that they should read their energy contracts before committing to them.
energywatch's Patricia Ockenden said that commercial electricity users need to be fully aware of what they are signed up to as they are not afforded the same protection that households receive.
She went on to explain why forward planning may also be useful to businesses that have only just got off the ground.
The expert said: "Small businesses are not protected by regulation in the same way as domestic consumers, so it is vital that in every case, they fully understand the terms and conditions of their contracts before they commit."
Established in 2000, energywatch was created to protect and represent the interests of the UK's gas and electricity customers.
The organisation is set to be merged with the National Consumer Council in October, meaning businesses will need to take any complaints they have directly to an energy provider.
